Choosing a School: School Ratings and other Important Factors

It’s that time: your little guy is growing up and he is ready for school. Whether it is preschool or primary school there is nothing more overwhelming for a parent than watching your child take his first steps towards independence.

However, when that time comes, you want to ensure you’ve made the best decision possible. After all, a child’s education is one of the most important factors in how he will grow up.

So what should you look for in a school? What options do you have? How important are school ratings? What other things need to be considered?

Read on to find out all your need to know about choosing the right schooling system for your child.

Understanding the School System

There are several different types of schools. Public school is the most common type of school in America. However, there are also charter schools, private schools and  magnet schools.

If you are planning on enrolling your child into public school then your child will automatically be enrolled in the one in your neighbourhood as determined by government boundaries. However, it is able to request a public school transfer if the neighbouring school is not up to your standards or does not work with your schedule.

Alternative schools such as charter schools, private schools and magnet schools all operate outside the traditional public school realm as well.  Charter schools are usually smaller in size and offer a great alternative to public school. Private schools are considered ‘upper class’ schools and suggest to offer a better learning experience for a fee. Magnet schools are focused on a certain subject or idea such as music or art.

School Ratings

There are several educational-based websites that offer school ratings and testimonials for any school across the nation. This is a great factor in deciding which the best school is for your child. School ratings are based on several different criteria including class size, teacher quality and personal experience. Parents are usually the ones who rate the school and there are often virtual tours available so that you can view the school in question.

While determining a school rating is a great place to start, you still need to do your homework.  After all, no one is able determine what school is best for your child except for you.

Visiting the School

The best way to determine if a school is right for your child is to actually visit the school. Meet the teachers and students, view the classrooms and extracurricular activities and discuss learning approaches with the principal.

You should also consider how your child will fit into the learning environment. If he is shy then a larger school may be overwhelming for him. If he is already showing signs of being gifted in a certain subject then perhaps opt for a charter school or a magnet school.

School ratings and visits are a great way to research the different schools out there. However, putting your child first is the best approach when it comes to choosing the right school.
