Researching your Child’s Education: What to Consider at Every Age

Whether your child is 6 months, 6 years or 16 years old, you most certainly have thought about his educational future. You want to ensure he receives the best education possible and that means doing the necessary educational research. So, no matter what age he is at, make sure you know what you’re getting into by doing the appropriate educational research.

Elementary School

Many educational websites offer school ratings and comparisons where you can see what others think about your school of choice. This can be a very handy way to research educational schools for your child based on things like parental involvement, class sizes, teacher quality and extracurricular activities.

School rating websites can be a great indication of what types of schools are out there. However, nothing is more important than taking a trip to the schools and seeing how they operate first hand.

High School

High school can be a hard time for students. They are growing into their own and often this can bring confusion, self esteem issues and rebellion. Choosing a high school for your child is often not so much your choice as theirs.

Your child is going to want to attend high school where her friends are attending high school. There is nothing worse than starting at a new school when you are a teenager. However, you need to do your education research before choosing a school for your high schooler.

If she is gifted you may want to consider a school that focuses on her talent. There are certain schools that focus on dance, music, art, etc. Your child will still get a full-rounded education but also receive a chance to pursue their talent and take it to the next level.

No matter what type of high school you decide for your teenager, there is a good chance that at one point or another they are going to complain about it. Allowing them to transfer from one school to another is usually not your best bet unless the problem is severe and putting your child in emotional and physical danger. Keep in mind that many high school students would rather be anywhere but in high school and thus, no matter what decision you choose, they will think it’s the wrong one.

College

There are so many decisions when it comes to college for your child. Online education, distance education, study abroad programs and apprenticeships make it harder than ever to choose which path he should take.

However, the most important thing to remember when deciding what college your child should attend is that it is his choice, not yours. While which elementary, middle school and secondary school may have been your choice, college is out of your realm.

However, this doesn’t mean you can’t do your educational research. The best way to know more about your child’s school of choice is by researching the schools online. The Department of Education offers plenty of different resources for accredited colleges and programs in your area. Check out tuition costs, program guides and take a virtual tour to learn more about your child’s chosen educational path.

The rest is up to him.
