While summer school once had a bad name, millions are discovering that are actually a wonderful experience. These programs take many forms. At their heart, they are designed to provide you with a short but meaningful experience on a focused topic. Thus, instead of shying away, you should be voluntarily participating in summer programming as a part of your educational plan.
All that is needed is to start looking, and you will quickly be amazed at the breadth and depth of the programming on offer. To choose a program that's right for you, it will be necessary to come up with a list of criteria to judge the various programs. Once you have your own scoring system, you will be able to rate the relative merits of the sessions for your personality and educational goals.
For example, you could go to Asia for two weeks to study business, or you could fly to Houston to do a summer of international marketing courses. Many international universities offer summer language immersion programs, which focus on nothing but learning to speak and communicate at a native fluency level. When it comes to courses, the choice is yours.
You also are not bound to strictly coursework oriented programs. You can do a summer experience volunteering for a charity, or set out on a catamaran to sail with a team for a month as a crew member and learn about that lifestyle. Let your interests dictate your choice, and come away from the summer with a richer experience than you would have had working in an office setting as an intern.
Of course, one of the aspects of the summer program experience that makes it wonderful for experimentation and risk-taking is that the programs are of limited length. You can afford to take a risk on something that you've always been dreaming about trying without having to worry that you are compromising the rest of your educational experience. In the most efficient manner possible, you will be able to evaluate whether or not a particular topic area merits further investment or study.
With all of the possibilities and the opportunity to efficiently use your summer months to accumulate life experiences, summer school should no longer seem like a punishment. Instead, it is a gift you can give yourself. Open your eyes and look at what is being offered to you this year, so that you can select something worthwhile to pursue.
